On December 17, 2011, a severe storm hit the southern part of the Philippines, causing extensive damage and loss of lives. Flash floods and landslides sent rain, mud, logs and trees, crashing down on the local people, killing more than 1,500. More than 338,000 people in 13 provinces were affected by the disaster, with more than 10,000 houses extensively damaged. Nearly 43,000 people are currently staying in emergency shelters, schools and churches. Many more remain missing and unaccounted for.
Although this tragedy occurred over 2 months ago, there is still an urgent need for help in terms of food, clothing, and medicines. The country's president has declared a state of national calamity and has ordered the respective government departments to extend all necessary assistance to the affected villages.
“Due to this disaster, the entire Filipino CommUNITY is compelled to help these victims in anyway we can”… says Roland Moreno, president of Filipino CommUNITY of New Brunswick. “Through this fundraising event we are reaching out for your support and assistance to help bring our community together to help the many victims of this disaster in our home country.”
